DeKalb reopens Cedar Grove Bridge after $14.5 million SPLOST investment

DeKalb County’s CEO opened the ribbon-cutting ceremony and credited former commissioner Larry Johnson and a 2021 legislative action that put $14,500,000 of SPLOST funding toward replacing the Cedar Grove Bridge. The CEO said the project replaces the 1965 span and includes reconstructed roadway approaches, upgraded intersections, sidewalks, improved drainage and detour-route improvements to minimize disruption.
"It was in 2021 that former commissioner Larry Johnson carried the legislative piece ... that brought to a vote the investment of $14,500,000 from SPLOST that made today possible," the County CEO said. Nicole Messiah, DeKalb County commissioner for District 3, said the bridge reconnects neighborhoods and businesses and will improve emergency response and daily commutes.
Messiah noted the project timeline and delivery challenges: the bridge had been slated for a two-year repair but took several years longer to complete, a delay she said she will press to avoid in future projects. County officials said the work is intended to enhance safety and foster economic development in South DeKalb.
