Hague files with state for special equalization rate to address school tax disparity

Council member Bast told the Town Board that on Feb. 27 the town submitted a formal application to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance seeking establishment of a special equalization rate to adjust how school taxes are apportioned for Hague properties within the Ticonderoga Central School District.
Bast said the town pursued the administrative remedy because the average level of assessment (LOA) in the town differs substantially from other segments of the school district, resulting in what the town regards as disproportionate per‑pupil costs. "The goal of seeking a special equalization rate is tax equity," Bast said. The application is under review by the state's Office of Real Property Tax Services.
Bast asked residents to consider running for the Board of Education to ensure town representation at meetings where related decisions are discussed; he also urged residents to attend the next school board meeting on March 17. The board did not vote on this item — Bast reported the filing and the town awaits state action.
