Barre board introduces updated flood damage prevention law, schedules public hearing

The Barre Town Board voted to introduce an updated local flood damage prevention law and to publish a clean copy for public review, the board confirmed at its meeting. Chair (S1) moved to introduce the proposed local law and S3 seconded; the motion carried by voice vote.
Staff member S2 said the proposed model language updates maps and flood insurance studies and "coincides with the current maps and studies" while not removing protections residents currently have. S2 advised that because the proposed local language would be more restrictive than the state'level uniform codes the town would have to petition the state after adoption: "the town has to adopt the law. And then within 30 days of the adoption, it has to make the petition." S2 further warned that the town should aim to have the law adopted by Oct. 15.
The board agreed to make a clean, non'redlined version available for the public hearing so residents can review a single, readable draft rather than a marked-up version, and S2 said adoption is the appropriate time to decide whether to keep or remove optional additional language. The board then voted to set a public hearing on the proposed local law for Oct. 8 at 6:25 PM.
Next steps: staff will publish the clean copy for public viewing, and the board will hold the public hearing on Oct. 8 before returning to the adoption decision at a subsequent meeting.
