Longtime volunteer Roland Schachtschneider recognized for litter-prevention work

The Hampton City Council presented a proclamation recognizing Roland Schachtschneider for nearly 12 years of volunteer service in the city's Adopt-a-Spot program and other community clean-up work.
Councilmember Tuck read the proclamation, which credited Roland with long-term participation at Barron Elementary School, Fox Hill Road cleanups and other educational efforts. The proclamation recited totals and milestones in support of the recognition.
Roland accepted the award and provided numerical totals as part of his remarks: "I have picked up a 139,441 butts of cigarette ends, which has saved 278,882 gallons of water from contamination from the chemicals that come out of cigarette ends when they hit the water," he said. He also noted the hours donated and the influence of others who inspired his work.
Debbie Blanton and John Golden of the Clean City Commission praised Roland's efforts and urged others to volunteer, saying his work demonstrates how small personal actions can become large community benefits.
