Hampton council honors Devante Green for Boys State leadership; American Legion representative outlines program

Councilman Moffitt read the proclamation, noting Green's service as a page in the U.S. House of Representatives, leadership roles at Phoebus High School and that the proclamation was signed by Mayor Molly Joseph Ward. "This proclamation is in recognition of Devante Green..." the council reading stated.
Devante Green thanked the mayor and council and described Boys State as a hands-on civic-education program that taught students how government functions. "If you ask anyone who's ever participated... we take it very seriously," he said, adding that the program teaches leadership and civic responsibility.
Robert O'Keefe, Adjutant of American Legion Post 48, provided historical context and logistics for Boys State, describing the program's origins and its objective to "develop both the civic leadership and pride in the American citizenship" through practical exercises and elections. He said the program is currently held at Liberty University and includes instructional sessions and guest speakers from multiple government levels.
