Public safety advisor says early outreach aims to "stop the shooting cycle"

Mr. Goods, the city's public safety advisor, told a Shelby County committee that one of his primary roles is overseeing the Joint Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement and coordinating outreach to people at highest risk of violent retaliation. "Being able to reach them at an early stage and stop the shooting cycle, so to speak," he said, adding the work includes connecting people to treatment and other resources.
The advisor said the office will work with philanthropic partners and neighborhoods to focus on adults roughly aged 18–25 who are either committing or becoming victims of gun violence. He framed the role as both prevention and intervention, asking the committee to consider what supports the office needs to engage that population and to integrate the office's work into budgeting discussions ahead of the next meeting.
