Hampton teen Joshua Williams wins Sister Cities international art prize; council presents commemorative Hampton coin

The council recognized Joshua Williams, a senior at Hampton High School, as the United States winner of the Sister Cities International Young Artist Showcase. Brian Bridal said Williams won $200 for the local competition and $1,000 for the international prize for his linoleum print titled 'Cotton Club Crescendo.' The winning artwork and nine semifinalists are on a national tour and will be displayed in Hampton at the Charles H. Turner Art Center as part of the Artists Who Teach show from March 3 to April 7; an opening reception was announced for Sunday from 3–5 p.m.
After the announcement, Vice Mayor Wallace presented Joshua with a Hampton coin and issued a public challenge: "my challenge to you, Joshua, is that you will now ... design 1 side of our coins for the future so that we'll have a Joshua design on the Hampton coin," praising his talent and noting the attention his work has brought to Hampton. Council members and the audience applauded. The spotlight program concluded with arrangements for photos and a notice that public comment would begin about 10 minutes later.
