City counsel (Nick) briefed the council on a state law change concerning property‑tax exemptions for veterans. He said New York enacted a law in December that offered a full property‑tax exemption for primary residences owned by veterans with a 100% service‑connected disability; an amendment on Feb. 13 made the exemption mandatory for taxing jurisdictions, removing the need for local adoption. The city does not need to act for the exemption to be available, but eligible residents must apply to the assessor with documentation; city staff said the exemption will be effective on the next assessment roll (affecting 2027/2028 fiscal tax cycles).
Council members asked whether the exemption is automatic or requires application; counsel confirmed residents must apply and staff will assist. The council and staff discussed outreach to ensure eligible veterans are aware of the program and noted the assessor’s office is prepared to help complete the state form.
