MassDEP highlights nitrogen reduction projects for coastal waters in 2026 RFP

MassDEP staff identified nitrogen‑impacted coastal waters as a geographic priority under the 2025–2029 NPS Management Plan and told applicants those areas will receive eligibility and prioritization under both 604(b) and 319 funding streams. The presenter said the geographic focus includes Title 5 regulated areas on Cape Cod and additional mapped zones that are eligible for nitrogen‑reduction funding.
As examples of plausible 319 implementation components that would generate nitrogen load reductions, MassDEP listed "installation of enhanced innovative alternative nitrogen reducing septic systems, installation of permeable reactive barriers, and restoration of wetland areas." The department emphasized these examples are not exhaustive and that projects must demonstrate measurable pollutant‑load reductions to EPA reporting standards.
