Commission keeps tax-rate blank as county awaits state recertification; budget timing draws criticism

On second reading commissioners voted to leave the numeric tax rate blank while awaiting state certification of the recertified rate, a step several members said was necessary to avoid adopting an incorrect rate. Commissioner Clay Bibbs moved to leave the blank and reported the item would return for third reading; the motion advanced on a recorded vote and the commission scheduled possible action for its remaining meetings in June.

Commissioners expressed frustration about the timing and availability of the consolidated budget book. "Are we basically gonna have time to fill in this blank?" Commissioner Ford asked, pressing the administration on whether two remaining commission meetings provide sufficient time to reconcile the certified rate with budget actions. Several commissioners urged broader access to budget materials through committee and for the chair to ensure the mayor’s office provides prompt answers so the commission can deliberate amendments and avoid late, rushed votes.

The commission also debated related budget processes: subcommittee schedules, the wage‑study implementation and the interplay between the recertified rate and proposed employee compensation changes. The board did not adopt a numeric rate at the session; the item advanced in procedure and will return on third reading when the certified figure is available.
