Matthew Sheehan of Development Services presented the monthly inspections report, noting four new food establishments opened during the reporting period, six inspection failures (one closure, now reopened), 255 rental-unit inspections and 809 combined code complaints handled with the building department in July.
Sheehan highlighted several recurring concerns: viral social-media videos that often prove inaccurate, increased construction-related complaints, and a citywide rodent issue tied in part to public feeding of wildlife and food left in classrooms and camp settings. He said staff use signage and outreach and photograph violations for follow-up and recommended increased school measures such as sealed containers for food and closed doors to reduce rodent attractants.
Board members and staff discussed enforcement options, increased education and targeted inspections. The inspection team plans school inspections during the week of Sept. 14 and will continue outreach to property owners and vendors in neighborhoods with persistent complaints.
