County airport staff briefed commissioners on House Bill 1434, new state guidance that affects approach surfaces and zoning around airports and ties compliance to state funding. The airport representative said the county’s current ordinance was written when the airport was built and “we are in compliance with” much of the new law but that staff will need to fine-tune ordinance language and overlay maps.
Staff warned that the law will require coordination with neighboring counties because approach surfaces cross county lines, and noted deadlines to identify affected areas by Jan. 1, 2027 and to adopt protective zoning by July 1, 2027. Commissioners asked staff to meet with building and zoning directors in adjacent counties to present the proposed ordinance language before local adoption.
