Budget director disputes 9% tax claim as board presses for more detail on revenues and cuts

At the July 16 meeting, Councilman Boyse challenged the board to examine revenue streams and expenditures before approving a tax increase, citing a figure the budget director provided that the town’s taxes had fallen by roughly $224,000 over the last 16 years. Boyse said he wanted more granular numbers on revenues (sales tax, CHIPs, mortgage taxes) and on expenditures before considering any increase.
Budget Director Steve responded directly, saying his packet offered options for the board’s consideration and that staff have no authority to impose a tax increase. "What I gave to the board was a unanimous recommendation from the fact that included some options to consider," Steve said, and he asked the board to specify what additional information they needed. The board agreed to request more detailed revenue and expenditure breakdowns and to begin formal budget work in August.
