Council adopts ordinance barring trucks over 13 tons on 1st–4th Streets

The Amsterdam Common Council voted unanimously June 16 to adopt Ordinance No. 6 of 2026, which amends city code section 2-28-45 (Schedule 11) to prohibit trucks in excess of 13 tons on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Streets.
The ordinance was introduced by Alderman Holliday and presented at an open public hearing earlier in the meeting. The clerk summarized the proposal as an amendment "adding the entirety of 1st Street, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, and 4th Street to prohibiting trucks in excess of 13 tons," and no members of the public spoke during the hearing. The council then moved to adopt the ordinance; the clerk recorded aye votes from Aldermen Holliday, Collins, Carpenter, Marticello and Quistamars.
The ordinance language states it was recommended by Police Chief Joseph Spencer in response to citizen concerns over truck traffic on the listed streets. The council made no additional amendments during the meeting; the ordinance passed by roll call and will be effective according to the city's ordinance-adoption rules.
