County engineer reports 20 miles of micro-surface work, crews have placed 7,000+ tons of pot mix

Dan Dahlke, the county engineer, told commissioners at their April 23 work session that contractors completed about 20 miles of scrub- or micro-surface treatment and that county crews have laid “a little over 7,000 tons of pot mix” this season.
Dahlke said micro-surface is useful on smaller defects but not a solution where there are large holes. He also warned that the county relies on contractors for the specialized micro-surface rigs and that a recent equipment breakdown required a part from Tennessee, delaying the crew about a week. “They started in Germany on the Autobahn,” he said of the contractor rigs, explaining why the county does not own that equipment.
Commissioners discussed how the placed shoulder work and pot mix will extend pavement life and reduce future workload, and noted that portions of shoulder work are being coordinated with nearby Pell City projects. No formal action was taken; staff said they will include the updates on the consent or informational agenda for the upcoming meeting.
