Calvert planners to proceed with update to strategic roadway safety plan, citing new crash software

Calvert County planning staff presented an update to the county's Strategic Roadway Safety Plan on Feb. 10 and asked the board to support continued work by the Traffic Safety Council. Commissioners voted to support staff moving forward with the update and public outreach.
Planner (speaker 30) said the county adopted its prior strategic roadway safety plan in December 2023 and is tailoring the update to align with the state's Vision Zero goal. Staff identified five emphasis areas—speeding and aggressive driving, distracted driving, impairment, occupant protection and vulnerable road users—and explained that the county recently implemented crash-analysis software that provides biweekly updated crash data. The near-real-time data, staff said, allows the county to identify high-incident locations and target enforcement and engineering countermeasures.
The board directed staff to proceed with public informational sessions and continue Traffic Safety Council coordination. Staff said next steps include targeted outreach and identifying high-incident locations for engineering and enforcement interventions.
