Health director warns $2 billion SAMHSA cuts could affect local services

The Vernon County Health Department director alerted the board to a federal funding change affecting behavioral-health infrastructure, saying that on Jan. 14 the federal government "decided to cut $2,000,000,000 of mental health funding through the, substance abuse and mental health services." She said the department currently has no grants directly tied to that funding stream but expressed concern that local human-services organizations and partner agencies could be affected.
A board member asked whether the cut had been publicly announced; the director said the information came through their WALDAP regional representative and that the county would "take the time to digest" the likely downstream effects. The director recommended awareness and follow-up with partner agencies to determine specific impacts.
