Lottie Whetstone, recreation superintendent for Grand Prairie Parks, Arts and Recreation, announced a citywide back-to-school backpack giveaway set for Saturday, Aug. 8 at Tony Shotwell Life Center (2750 Graham Street) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. "The backpacks are preloaded with school supplies for the community," Whetstone said, adding distribution is first-come, first-served and that adults receive a voucher and may take up to two backpacks per person while supplies last.
Whetstone said the event will feature additional vendors handing out supplies and information and named sponsors including WellPoint (title sponsor), Outlaw's Barbecue and a local Order of Eastern Star lodge. She urged families to arrive early, noted the organizers have removed registration in favor of a voucher system, and described rec-center summer programming that feeds into volunteer and workforce pathways for youth.
