Pleasant Prairie honors Police Chief David Smetana with resolution of appreciation

The Village Board of Pleasant Prairie unanimously adopted Resolution 25-41 on Dec. 8, 2025, formally recognizing Chief of Police David Smetana for decades of law-enforcement service and leadership. The resolution cites Smetana’s service beginning in 1983 and his appointment as the village’s fourth chief in January 2013.
Chief Smetana thanked department members and his family in brief remarks after the board read the resolution. "It's humbling," he said, adding that the accomplishments listed in the resolution were achieved because "we had a process, and we trusted the process." Trustees highlighted Smetana’s role in adopting body-worn cameras, improving training, strengthening regional coordination and advancing officer-wellness programs.
Board members credited Smetana with guiding the department through rapid local growth, the 2022 public-safety referendum and planning for a modern police station expected in 2025. A trustee who worked with Smetana on the hiring process said the chief provided "honest, unbiased, factual" information to the board during contentious decisions.
The motion to approve the resolution was moved, seconded and carried unanimously. Following the vote, the board presented the formal acknowledgment to Smetana and thanked him for his service.
