Committee backs 30‑day retention rule for property removed during nuisance abatements

Jennifer Higgins, planning and development director, explained the proposal: staff would retain removed personal property for 30 days and could immediately dispose of garbage or material “with no apparent value.” She said the change reflects common municipal practice and would provide clarity when staff must hold items after an abatement. "The proposed amendment requires personal property to be retained for 30 days," Higgins said.
Staff noted added administrative work for documenting removed goods and a modest storage cost while items are held; recovery of dumpster and disposal fees would be charged to the property owner or placed on the tax roll if unpaid. The committee moved to recommend the code change and approved the motion by voice vote; the recommendation will go to the village board for final action.
