Town announces respite center opening, Earth Day tree and short-term rental counts

Supervisor Adams announced that the Recharge and Renew Respite Center will have its first opening day on Feb. 20 at the Canaan Congregational Church. The board also approved participating in a Columbia County Soil & Water effort to plant an Earth Day tree (part of a countywide program), with the Climate Smart Task Force to choose species and assume maintenance responsibilities.
On short-term rentals, Adams reported there are 44 registered STRs in town and that 14 other locations reported they were no longer advertising or operating; the Code Enforcement Officer is assessing compliance. Councilperson Mills invited a public commenter to bring recycling/education ideas to the Climate Smart Task Force meeting on Feb. 24. The board also approved forming a not-for-profit to raise private funds for town projects, which could support park work and other community programs.
