City provides demolition update for condemned 211 E. 4th Ave; low bid $218,615

Vest said the project will include asbestos abatement, demolition, debris removal, backfill, compaction and seeding. Staff received five bids in a competitive process with the low bid of $218,615 and the high bid of $439,200. Vest said the city has the funds in the annual demolition budget and will bond the project; staff plans to bring the contract back to council for official award and expects to work with Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) on required notifications prior to demolition.
Vest said the city has spoken with the contractor and anticipates awarding the work to Miller Earthworks, a firm that previously worked on the Atrium demolition. Asbestos removal is expected to take about three weeks before demolition begins.
No formal vote was required; the update was informational and staff will return with contract documents for formal action.
