Shorewood OKs up to $60,000 purchase of road salt after IDOT bid exclusion

The village approved a purchase authorization Jan. 13 for bulk road salt from Midwest Salt not to exceed $60,000 at an estimated price of $92.62 per ton, after staff said Shorewood was not included on IDOT's bulk procurement this season.
Director Noriega told the board the village currently has about 800 tons on hand but has used nearly 700 tons during recent storms and wants to refill inventory to ensure safe winter operations. Staff estimated IDOT's average price would have been about $70 per ton; trustees approved the purchase by motion and roll call.
Public works said it will request a larger purchase in the next budget cycle to replenish long‑term capacity (facility capacity was reported at approximately 3,000 tons). The board recorded the motion by Trustee Amos and second by Trustee Babiak.
