Skokie superintendent announces committee to craft classroom-display guidance

Superintendent Grens told the board the district will convene a committee, led by the Educational Services Department and composed of teachers and administrators, to develop guidance on classroom displays following concerns raised about a Palestinian flag removed from a junior-high classroom. "This committee will develop clear, practical guidance to help ensure that classroom displays are age appropriate, educationally meaningful, and align with the district's commitment to serving all students," Grens said.
Grens framed the committee as supportive rather than censorial: "This committee is not intended to censor nor suppress identity, but rather to foster inclusivity and promote practical guidance for staff." The superintendent said the committee will work outside the instructional day and that its work will distinguish school-sponsored speech from personal and student expression so staff have clearer expectations.
The initiative follows a board proclamation adopted on 11/20/2025 affirming the district's dedication to belonging; the superintendent asked community members to engage with the district's strategic-plan survey and said materials from an equity audit are available on the district website.
