The Skokie School District 68 Board confirmed the appointment of Mrs. Ferial Atto as the next principal of Highland Elementary School, with an official start date of July 1, 2026. Superintendent Scott Grens described the appointment as the result of a comprehensive, community-informed search and said the district will implement a transition process so students, families and staff can meet Atto before she begins.
Grens summarized Atto’s district experience, noting she currently serves as assistant principal at Old Orchard Junior High and has more than a decade of District 68 service, including roles as a multilingual educator, department chair and reading specialist at Jane Stenson Elementary. The announcement said Atto is pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership at National Louis University, expected in 2026–27. In her remarks recorded in the minutes, Atto expressed gratitude and affirmed commitments to cultural responsiveness, equity, inclusion and strong family partnerships.
The Board approved the appointment as part of its actions during the Feb. 19 meeting. No salary or contract terms for the principal role were specified in the minutes; the district said a transition process would provide opportunities for community connection prior to her July start date.
