County staff propose regional food access summit after food-insecurity briefing

Barnstable County commissioners discussed food insecurity on Cape Cod and recommended the county sponsor a food access summit this fall to coordinate pantries, agencies and funders, Regional Administrator Michael Dutton told the assembly.
Dutton said Andrea Scarpalini led the county discussion with participation from nearly all relevant local food pantries. "We had a really good discussion that culminated with the idea that the county should sponsor essentially a food access summit, sometime this fall," he said, noting staff are developing summit goals, topics and an invite list intended to capture all pertinent agencies.
Delegates asked for the presentation slides; Dutton agreed to provide them. He said the summit would be designed to preserve local nonprofit efforts while enabling the county to seek state and federal funding and to leverage a regional approach to food-access challenges.
No formal funding decisions were made at the meeting; Dutton said the commission will return with more details and objectives for the proposed summit.
