Council directs staff to explore foreclosure on three properties with abatement liens

Mayor Johann Wallace raised the issue of properties on which the Town has expended funds for abatement and asked whether the Town should consider foreclosure to recover costs. Town Attorney Thomas Benavidez told Council the process is complicated and will require money to proceed; he said, "the Town has already put $16,000.00 into 217 Pima over the years," and cautioned that some properties might not be worth the foreclosure cost.
After discussion of costs, process and potential value to the town, Council voted to direct staff to explore foreclosure on abatement liens for 217 Pima Street, 303 Apache Street and 103 Tomahawk (motion by Johann Wallace, second by Cynthia Butterworth; the minutes record the motion passed unanimously). Attorney Benavidez will return with process steps and cost estimates if Council wishes to proceed further.
