Council authorizes animal code updates and backs county shelter collaboration

The Huachuca City Council on Jan. 8 authorized the town attorney to draft amendments to the municipal animal code and directed staff to send a letter supporting a Cochise County proposal for a local animal shelter.
Chief Berry explained parts of the current animal code are no longer relevant to shelter operations and that revising the code would make collaborating with the county easier. "This removes some parts of code that are no longer relevant regarding the animal shelter and would make working with county easier if they do put a shelter in town," the minutes record.
Town Manager Suzanne Harvey told the council a county collaboration "would be a benefit to the town." The council voted unanimously to authorize preparing ordinance changes and to submit a letter stating the town supports the proposed Cochise County animal shelter. The minutes do not record proposed ordinance language, a funding commitment, or a construction schedule.
