Residents urge safer Circle K crosswalk after child struck

Two residents told the Huachuca City Council on Jan. 8 that a marked crosswalk at the Circle K on Gonzales Boulevard is unsafe and that drivers are not stopping for the signal.
Lonnie Brock said the crossing lights are not visible and argued that something safer should be installed. Tami Ackerson described a more urgent risk, saying her daughter was struck while using the crosswalk properly. "Cars do not see the lights and stop," Ackerson told the council during the public comment period.
Mayor Johann Wallace acknowledged the concern and later noted the crosswalk has received media attention: "Crosswalk is getting lots of attention. KOLD and KGUN9 both spoke to." Wallace said the town is planning a meeting with the Arizona Department of Transportation to explore safety improvements.
The council did not take immediate formal action during the meeting but indicated staff and the mayor would pursue talks with ADOT. Residents seeking follow-up were told the issue could return to a future agenda if additional steps or funding are required.
