"Building math classrooms is really focused on student centered problem solving," the presenter said, describing routines such as randomized small groups, pen-holder procedures and use of large nonpermanent whiteboards to lower math anxiety and encourage error analysis. Students Sofia and Jonathan described benefits: Sofia said the vertical whiteboards "helped us with communicating and seeing different perspectives," and Jonathan added that the boards helped him explain thinking in ways others could understand.
Teachers and trustees discussed scaling and training. Staff said teachers from multiple sites participated in summer workshops and that additional training would be offered the following summer. Trustees encouraged expanding the practice across sites and asked staff to report back on outcomes tied to assessment results.
