Residents press Selectboard on $15,000 Bradley Cemetery fund as association appears defunct

The Town of Fairfield Selectboard heard a large group of residents June 22 about the status of Bradley Cemetery and a $15,000 restricted fund that an apparently inactive Bradley Cemetery Association entrusted to the town over a decade ago. Town Administrator Cathy Ainsworth told the board the association is a separate legal entity, currently inoperative, and that the town lacks authority to withdraw the fund without either the association providing the required books and approvals or a legal dissolution transferring responsibility to the town.
Several attendees described the cemetery’s recent condition and asked the town to act. Albert Morey raised concern that money exists but mowing is not happening; Harold Garrett said the cemetery looks much better since the issue became public. Bill Fairchild described himself as the remaining association contact and said, "I am what is left of the Association. There are forms that need filing to reinstate or dissolve the association." The Selectboard reiterated that access to the $15,000 requires either three active documented association members to approve expenditures or formal dissolution; Brian Dubie added the town would "probably" assume care if the association were dissolved and encouraged local volunteers and outreach to pursue reinstatement or formal transfer of responsibility.
