Ad hoc committee formed to study JDC property; members cite safety and funding concerns

President Richard Samples introduced Ben Cox, who described an ad hoc citizen committee called "Moving Jacksonville Forward" that will study the JDC property and other sites, solicit citizen participation and pursue actionable recommendations. "He is going to push the committee to do things and have action at every meeting," Cox said, and said the group will engage state officials and outside experts in seeking options for the site.
Cox raised safety and environmental concerns about an aging tower on the property and said first responders could be overwhelmed if the tower collapsed. Trustee J.W. Coleman asked whether the property might qualify for Superfund cleanup money; Cox said he believes it would and noted the state is working with the University of Kansas on a study. Chief Hansell added that South Jacksonville officers are frequently at the JDC site assisting Jacksonville police with scrapping and trespassing issues. The board requested periodic updates and agreed to monitor the committee's progress.
