Licenses panel approves Sunny Days Foods liquor application 4–1 after neighbors voice safety concerns

The Licenses Committee voted 4–1 to approve a Class A malt and liquor license for Sunny Days Foods at 2500 North Dousman Street despite opposition from several neighbors who said the neighborhood already has a high density of alcohol outlets.

Owner Michael Hudson acknowledged a prior citation for selling tobacco to a minor and said the business had since complied, received follow-up inspections, and changed staff training. He stated that the citation was paid and praised the outcome of subsequent compliance visits. "We did get cited, and we did comply," Hudson said.

Neighbors gave mixed testimony. Blue Pelican, who works in the area, supported Hudson and praised community work. Kathy Olive, who lives within two blocks of the store, urged the committee to deny further liquor sales, saying the neighborhood already bears a high density of alcohol outlets and detailing problems she links to that density: "We frequently have to put up with public urination, littering of garbage cans, public drinking in the alley, loitering in our alley," Olive testified.

The applicant proactively amended his application to remove small single-shot bottles and to sell only bottles 750 ml or larger for spirits; Alderman Alex Brower and other members cited that amendment as meaningful. After discussion and one objection, the motion to approve passed 4–1; the committee asked the applicant to continue cleanup efforts in the area and to coordinate with neighbors.
