Resident alleges assault and trafficking ties, asks county for investigation and to clear her name

A resident addressed the Commission June 9 with allegations of rape, stalking and what she described as trafficking-related conduct involving out-of-state visitors and local responses from volunteers and law enforcement.

Angela Haffey, who said she had been a volunteer with Anaconda Pintler Search and Rescue, told commissioners she was raped in March 2025 while in Bozeman and later believed she had been targeted by a group she described as staying in local short-term rentals. "I was raped; I was held there and couldn't leave," Haffey said during a lengthy public comment and asked county officials to investigate and help clear her name after she said she was terminated from the volunteer team.

County Attorney Morgan Smith said Haffey had contacted the county's Victim Advocate and that some matters Haffey seeks—such as private legal advice or employment disputes—may be better handled through private counsel or other nonpublic channels; Smith said she would follow up but noted some information cannot be shared in a public forum. Family member Vera Haffey said she had attempted to contact the County Attorney's office on Angela's behalf and described an unhelpful reception at one call.

The Commission did not take action at the meeting. Commissioners and county staff directed follow-up through appropriate offices so the resident could be informed of options for victim services and possible investigatory steps. The County Attorney said she would follow up regarding appropriate next steps but warned public legal advice is limited in a public meeting setting.
