IT director reports telecom savings and cybersecurity upgrades; .gov domain migration set for summer

Nick Craig, director of information technology, presented the IT portion of the resilience & sustainability budget, outlining major cost categories (telecom/installed telecom, licensing/maintenance, GIS) and the department's focus on consolidation and security.
Craig said an audit of telecom and hosted services yielded large recurring savings: "That Verizon bill that was 15,000 a month is now down to about 2,500 a month," he said. Craig described ongoing cybersecurity work since a 2022 incident, noting deployment of endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools and other best-practice safeguards. He also reviewed the .gov domain migration work and said staff are testing domain moves with a realistic target of July 1 for a full transition.
Councilors thanked IT staff for recent infrastructure work and asked whether the city could prevent a repeat of the 2022 outage; Craig said layered tools, audits and EDR host isolation were central to mitigation and that the city had followed an auditor's recommendations.
