HDC approves roof and window restoration at 41 School Street, continues remaining items

Flurry Properties' broad exterior application for 41 School Street was split May 13 so the commission could act on window and roof restoration while staff and the applicant supply additional elevations and details for garage modifications and other elements. The commission accepted a Newport Historical Society report as an exhibit and voted to approve repair and restoration of original windows and slate roof work (repair before replacement). The balance of the proposal — garage doors, cupola and additional alterations — was continued to the June meeting for supplemental elevation drawings.
Architect Mark Rapp told commissioners the principal work on the main structure is restorative: windows will be kept and restored where possible, chimneys will be rebuilt using saved brick and the roof slate will be repaired or replaced in kind. Commissioners requested elevations for the garage and more detailed documentation of proposed chimney work and gas‑light fixtures before considering the remaining elements.
