The presenter reviewed gift rules under the Code of Ethics, telling attendees that officials who participate in decisions may not accept cash or forgiveness of debt from an "interested person" and that the Code limits acceptable gifts to $25 per instance and $75 per year per interested person, subject to any stricter agency rule. "As someone who is subject to the code of ethics, If you participate in making decisions as part of your official duties, You may not accept cash or forgiveness of debt from an interested person," the staff member said.
She noted agency-specific policies may be stricter and asked officials to follow the stricter standard where it exists. The trainer also reminded municipal officials who must file annual financial disclosure statements that submissions were due this year on April 25 and stressed the disclosure form requests only the information necessary to identify conflicts — not personal bank balances.
