Animal Services reports staffing boosts, training and surge in kittens

Ashley Herr, director of Berrien County Animal Services, told the Administration Committee on June 25 that the department had rehired three part-time veterinary students for the summer and is retraining volunteers and offering certification to strengthen shelter operations.
Herr said staff completed Euthanasia by Injection training and Pullorum Testing training, the latter a state requirement for exhibitors. She reported eight open dog kennels and a recent surge in kittens, and said staff have focused efforts on increasing adoption numbers. Herr also noted several aggressive-dog incidents and bites this year and that the three-year licensing program is trending upward with positive community feedback.
Herr outlined upcoming events including a staff and volunteer appreciation cookout, a Pullorum testing clinic for exhibitors at the Youth Fair, and multiple adoption days. She said the Humane Society of West Michigan will conduct enrichment training and has offered one spot for a county employee. Herr added that the Friends of Berrien County Animal Services has begun sponsoring free microchips for pets at redemption; the group’s program has contributed to a large increase in cats being microchipped.
The update was presented as part of the committee’s regular reports; no formal action was taken.
