Council opened a public hearing on the city’s proposed biennial budget for fiscal years 2026–27 and quickly moved into procedural disagreement. A motion to table the budget hearing was made and seconded; the council and the city solicitor reviewed the effect of tabling and the limited opportunity for debate on such a motion.
The solicitor explained that tabling places the matter on the table pending future action and that, unless a substantially different document is presented, it will lie there until resurrected. Several councilors objected to the timing and said the council was being 'backed into a corner' by tight state and federal timelines surrounding other items; another member said the council must stop infighting and improve planning.
By show of hands the motion to table the budget hearing carried. The council did not adopt budget items or revenue appropriations at the meeting; a subsequent meeting will be required to resume budget deliberations.
