Special-education Wings Academy planned to open Aug. 17, district says

Casey Miller, executive director of the Henry-Stark Counties Special Education District, updated the Stark County CUSD 100 Board on the Wings Academy construction and program plan during public comments on March 23.
Miller said the plan is for Wings Academy to open for the 2026'17 school year with an opening date of Aug. 17, 2026, and that Kim Johnson will serve as principal. The facility is planned to house about 50 students and is intended to serve students with higher needs so they do not require transport to Peoria, Galesburg or the Quad Cities. Miller clarified that the district's Life Skills program in Kewanee will continue; Wings Academy is meant to serve students with higher needs.
Miller thanked advisory and governing board members and external partners—People's National Bank, American Legion Post 31 and Dewberry—for assistance with purchasing and remodeling the Railroad Avenue building in Kewanee. The board had no further questions during the meeting; the project will proceed through local planning and construction timelines.
