Subcommittee seeks faster notification when complaints are filed against school committee members

The policy subcommittee voted to refer an amended version of KE — the public-complaints policy for school committee members — to the full committee after members pressed for a guaranteed notification timeline.

Miss Azek argued the existing draft's phrase "if true" left too much discretion and proposed language requiring that the chair, vice chair or, in cases involving them, the superintendent's attorney notify the committee that a complaint has been filed within 48 hours. "We as members should know if there's a complaint before the community knows," she said, stressing the request was for notification only, not for substantive details.

Legal counsel and staff explained intake and civil-rights procedures can change complaint content during investigation and cautioned that certain statutes and notice requirements may dictate timing and form of disclosure. Counsel said notifying the committee of a complaint's existence within a short window—while withholding confidential specifics—was reasonable; the committee voted to refer the amended policy for full-committee review.
