Superintendent Cooper urges 'Champions for Children' and outlines 'Destination Schools' priorities

Dr. Angela Cooper, superintendent of Lexington 02, told staff at the district's 2026 back-to-school rally that the district's work centers on a simple mission: being "champions for children." Cooper said the phrase is both a leadership standard and an expectation for daily practice, urging staff to treat ordinary interactions as opportunities that can change a student's life.

Cooper outlined three academic priorities that she said will define the coming year: a strong literacy foundation; growth for every student driven by high-quality Tier 1 instruction and data-informed decisions; and "future-ready pathways" to prepare students for college, careers, military service and life after graduation. "High expectations, high support, together, always," she said, calling the combination essential to avoid leaving students and staff behind.

The superintendent described "Destination Schools" as more than a label: "A destination school is more than a school people choose. It is a school that intentionally creates extraordinary opportunities for every student," Cooper said, adding that the approach depends on focused instruction, consistent systems, and strong relationships.

Cooper also highlighted safety and systems improvements the district has pursued, including enhanced emergency preparedness and communication systems, multi-tiered supports, and continued full-time school social workers to provide wraparound supports. She framed those investments as part of the district's promise that students will learn in places that are safe, supportive and capable of producing measurable outcomes.

Cooper closed by asking attendees to see themselves as central to the district's mission: "You are the heart of Lexington 02," she said. She encouraged staff to protect the district culture, monitor outcomes and expand opportunities so that every student graduates "on time with purpose and confidence."
