Mesquite ISD board urges governor, Legislature to address teacher pay in resolution

The Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a two-page resolution calling attention to the district’s support for educators and urging the governor and Texas Legislature to increase the basic allotment to address teacher pay disparities.
Doctor Feinglass introduced the resolution and noted the TEA teacher vacancy task force and the state’s reported $32.7 billion budget surplus. "Educators and staff are identified as the single most important factor when it comes to impacting student outcomes," Doctor Feinglass said. The resolution asks the governor and legislature to "support our hardworking educators and staff by increasing the basic allotment necessary to address pay disparities and offset inflation."
Trustees debated the political context in which pay increases have stalled. Mr. Everett, who moved approval, said the board was "formally and respectfully are requesting that governor Greg Abbott call a special session and have the legislature come together to approve an increase in the basic allotment." The motion passed unanimously and trustees planned to sign the resolution to send a unified message to Austin.
