Mesquite ISD board adopts three-year strategic plan after year-long community process

After a year of surveys, forums and a 72-member committee, the Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a three-year strategic plan focused on a learner profile, social-emotional learning, safety, high-quality instruction and expanded student opportunities.
The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved a three-year strategic plan that district staff said was developed from community surveys, four community forums, student panels, seven focus groups and a committee of 72 stakeholders.
"We started last fall with our community survey ... we held 4 forums ... and we ended up with the committee of 72," Doctor Feinglass said while presenting the plan and the process that produced it. The plan’s stated learner profile includes goals for empowered learners, skilled collaborators, purposeful communicators, critical thinkers, emotional intelligence and contributing citizens.
Trustees praised the stakeholder engagement and pushed the work toward implementation. "It was very eye opening and great to see the chemistry between all the 40-something people we had there," Mr. Carville said during discussion. Mr. Rose moved to accept the report; Mr. Bingham seconded and the motion passed by voice vote.
Board materials and staff comments indicate the plan will be accompanied by a separate evidence-and-action spreadsheet and a dashboard that the district and community can use to monitor progress. Doctor Feinglass told trustees the district is building a platform to show evidence of impact and track whether goals are on course.
