Lewis County board reviews balanced $236.2M FY2027 budget with staffing additions

The Lewis County School Board reviewed a proposed FY2027 general purpose school fund budget that the district presented as balanced at $236,195,093. Director of finance summarized major revenue assumptions and a set of staffing and program changes the budget would fund.
"Balance budget is 236,195,093," the director of finance said during the presentation, noting the package includes a net of new positions across general education, special education and vocational programs. The proposal funds a 3.3% increase for teachers and a 1% increase for classified staff plus step increases, and sets beginning teacher pay at $50,016 and beginning hourly pay at $14.47.
The director walked the board through proposed fund-balance earmarks, citing a $10,229,000 total set aside for special education contracted services, textbook adoptions, other capital outlay and transportation equipment. Board members asked for follow-up detail on several county-contributed project payments the presenter said the finance office would confirm. The board set a follow-up work session and interviews later in the month to finalize any adjustments and to consider requests such as targeted substitute-pay increases.
