City seeks transfer of vacated elementary site for public-safety training facility

The city manager told council that the city has been communicating with Gadsden Independent School District to secure a 25-acre site (the vacated Sunland Park Elementary) for conversion into a public-safety training campus. The manager said the city negotiated an access point to the planned South Connector Road with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and described a vision for a state-of-the-art training facility that would support local criminal-justice programs and be open to county, state and federal agencies.
The manager said GISD is awaiting an appraisal and that the school board is expected to discuss the matter in closed session; the proposed transfer would be at no cost with conditions that the facility support criminal-justice programming in perpetuity. Capital projects manager Javi Herrera later said construction coordination (electrical connection issues with El Paso Electric) is the remaining near-term obstacle for related crew-building projects.
