School Health Advisory Council updates SHAC activity and flags pending state bills

The district SHAC reported its 2024–25 activities, recommended health remain a recommended (not required) graduation course, reviewed CATCH implementation and noted several state bills (SB25, HB2849, HB3908, HB497) that could affect local health and recess policies.
Daniella Rodarte, the district PE and health coordinator and SHAC lead, briefed trustees on the School Health Advisory Council’s work this year, membership and instructional recommendations.
Rodarte said SHAC — composed of parents, students, community members and district representatives — opened its roster to include additional students, held four recorded public meetings, and reviewed programs including CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) and the district wellness policy. She reported the district will not require health as a graduation course but will continue to recommend it.
Rodarte also summarized other council activity: a student health fair hosted by CTE health science students, implementation of a medical emergency response team (CPR/AED certification across campuses), a tobacco-survey pilot at North Mesquite High School and work connected to House Bill 3908 (fentanyl prevention and drug-poisoning-awareness education). She noted pending state legislation that could affect district policy, including Senate Bill 25 (daily PE and prohibitions on removing recess for discipline), House Bill 2849 (recess policies) and House Bill 497 (parental consent requirements for certain mental-health or family-planning materials).
Trustees had no immediate questions; Rodarte said SHAC will continue monitoring legislation and district compliance.
