Mesquite ISD board adopts 2025–26 school calendar with Aug. 12 start and July 31 report day for teachers

The Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2025–26 school calendar Monday, setting student classes to begin Aug. 12 and scheduling a teacher report day on July 31 to ensure required staff workdays and 75,600 instructional minutes.

Sabrina Smith outlined priorities used to build the calendar—ensuring quality instructional days, front-loading professional learning, preserving the week‑long fall break and identifying paired professional learning days that split elementary and secondary focus. She said staff built the draft after stakeholder feedback and internal review and shared survey results (1,691 responses) showing 72% of parent/guardian respondents gave the draft a passing rating (7–10 on a 1–10 scale). The proposed calendar keeps traditional holidays and schedules report/learning days so teachers have dedicated classroom prep time.

Smith explained trade-offs required to meet minutes and staff workdays: placing one teacher report day on July 31 and retaining the fall break meant the last teacher workday falls after Memorial Day. She said the district tried to minimize disruption while meeting statutory minutes and staffing contracts. Trustees moved and seconded the action; the board approved the calendar by voice vote, 7–0.

The calendar also schedules several named professional learning days, identifies workday counts (187 most teachers), and sets dates for paired staff training (examples: September 15/29 and November 3/4). The calendar will be published in English and Spanish and implemented following board direction.
