Mesquite ISD highlights growth in early literacy, dual credit and AVID expansion

Teaching-and-learning leaders described progress on several fronts meant to improve college readiness and early-literacy outcomes across Mesquite ISD.
Dr. Morris and secondary director Matt McCain said the district is focusing on pre-K enrollment outreach, data-driven interventions in early grades and curriculum support across content areas. "We had 863 responses" was cited earlier in the facilities discussion as an example of community engagement; in the teaching-and-learning presentation leaders pointed to targeted interventions such as the Texas Reading Academies rollout and district coaching to improve third-grade reading outcomes.
Secondary leaders reported growth in dual-credit participation (the district cited roughly 14,000 dual credit college hours earned by students, an increase of 400 hours from the prior reported year) and expansion of AVID to 15 sites. McCain said the department has provided more than 200 professional learning opportunities and is shifting data meetings to a PLC-focused model to give campus teams more targeted instructional guidance. Trustees asked how college readiness would be measured; presenters pointed to SAT, TSIA2 and dual-credit participation as primary metrics.
Board members praised the team’s direction and asked staff to continue reporting progress and measurable outcomes at future meetings. No board action was required for the effectiveness report; the presentation was informational.
