Mesquite ISD honors valedictorians, salutatorians and longtime staff

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees recognized top graduates and longtime staff at its May 12 meeting, presenting valedictorian and salutatorian honors for each high school and acknowledging community partners and paras of the year.
Sabrina Smith, the district's communications officer, opened the student recognitions by saying the district was "very proud that they're gonna be representing Mesquite ISD." Principals introduced students including Elijah George (Mesquite High School salutatorian), Alexa Castillo (Mesquite High School valedictorian), Cruz Trejo (North Mesquite salutatorian and a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholar awarded $225,000), and others who reported plans to attend institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, UT Tyler, MIT and Stanford. The presentations included scholarship figures and academic honors; one presenter noted a student had received more than $165,000 in academic scholarships and another cited scholarship offers totaling "close to $500,000."
The board also honored district employees and partners: Jennifer Johnson was named a Star Para of the Year with a $100 gift-card award, ASI Gymnastics was recognized as an Education Foundation community partner, and the district announced three School Nurse of the Year recipients (Amber Hall, Yahaira Rios Zavala and Esther Lopez). Chastity Willie introduced Jennifer Johnson's recognition and said Johnson had "led the smooth implementation of a new applicant tracking system" for personnel services.
The recognitions were paired with an announcement of a student recognition event on May 19 and other upcoming district ceremonies. The items were presented as celebratory agenda items and required no board action.
